Questions About the Academy?

  • Minimum 10 years & 9 months old, maximum 15 years old. (Students may not hold a driver’s license of any kind.)
  • NXG participants must be proficient in 5th-grade Math and English.
  • Be able to mentally and physically operate/control a motorized go-kart.
  • The height of a participant is limited to a minimum of 4’-8” and a maximum of 5’-10”. The weight limits are a minimum of 75 lbs. and a maximum of 165 lbs. These limits are based on the size of our karts and students being able to fit into them and operate them safely.
  • Indianapolis classes are conducted on parking lots at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Details on the exact location at IMS vary and are emailed out a couple of weeks before the class date.
  • Detroit classes are conducted at Cass Tech High School, in the school and on the student parking lot.
  • All NXG Youth Motorsports Academy classes take place on weekends from April through September.
  • MA100 classes take place over two days; Saturday, 8am-12:30pm and Sunday, 12:45-5pm.
  • MA200-400 are one day classes with lunch included. They are 8am-4:30pm.
  • No previous experience is required and in fact is not preferred. However, students do need to have the mental and physical capacity to operate a motorized go-kart.
  • No. NXG is not a driver development program.  It is an educational program that uses motorsports as the draw to teach students applications of STEM, develop life-skills, and expose them to careers in the industry.  They will learn techniques for successfully operating go-karts along the way.
  • Yes. There are 5 courses that must be taken in sequential order as each class builds upon knowledge and skill from the previous class.  All NXG participants, regardless of previous experience, are required to start with the first level course, the MA100.
  • In addition, NXG programs are designed for education and safe handling of motorized equipment. Each participant must be willing to listen and accept instruction. NXG Youth Motorsports, Inc. will deny program participation and immediately dismiss any student for misconduct, bullying, or exhibiting unsafe behavior. Should a student participant be dismissed, any paid program fees will not be refunded.
  • At each class, students are issued a driving suit, helmet and balaclava, neck brace, gloves and a chest protector for use during class.
  • Applications are online only. You may apply by clicking the “apply” button and then, selecting the appropriate application to complete. The New Student Application is for those who have never taken a class with NXG.  The Returning Student Application is for those who have successfully completed an MA100 course.
  • If thunderstorms or inclement weather causes the cancellation of class, everyone will be notified at least two hours prior to class. If there is light to moderate rain, we will still conduct our program. (There may be some driving in the rain.)

Preparing for the Road of Life

The objective of this course is to introduce students to principles of math and science related to motorsports, to teach them on-track communication using flags and hand signals, and to evaluate their comprehension with a written test reviewing the concepts taught in class and an auto-cross competition on the course.

 

We Are Surrounded by Pressure

The goal for this class is to teach, train, observe, and coach for individual improvement–focusing on driver behavior and skill development required for racing. There is an emphasis on understanding all the aspects of pressure needed to perform well regarding: the driver, the tires, and the engine, with course conditions and equipment being constants in the equation, the outcome is based on individual learning, and the application of that learning to performance.

Prerequisite: Must have completed MA100 course. 

Financial Literacy is a Key to Success

MA300 gives students an understanding of financial literacy and why it is so important in their lives. Each child comes from different socio-economic conditions, and from birth are affected by family finances. NXG helps to mold a positive attitude towards managing money to counter advertising and social pressure to spend. Using motorsports to demonstrate record keeping–knowing how much money is available, what has been spent, and what is anticipated for the future, helps put young people on the track for fiscal responsibility.

Prerequisite: Must have completed MA100 and MA200 courses. 

Understanding Basic Tools and How to Use Them

The objective of MA400 is to introduce students to a variety of manual and mental tools they may use in motorsport. The class starts with an introduction to the basic hand tools used to tune and/or repair engines and chassis. Many young people today do not know what hand tools are and how to use them. This class provides the information that middle school and high school shop classes used to offer. Students practice manual dexterity and learn the technical aspects of hand tools.

Prerequisite: Must have completed MA100, MA200, and MA300 courses. 

This course offers an understanding of wheel-to-wheel competition. NXG racing is conducted as a specification or “spec” series vs formula series. There is a level playing field with equipment being the same to maximize fairness and equality. The goal for this class is to teach, train, observe, and coach for individual performance and improvement–focusing on the driver behavior and skill development required to get maximum results.
